Reuters (06/08/99)

Court proceedings will start this week against the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization, which has been charged with being criminally negligent in screening blood purchased from a French pharmaceutical company in 1994. An article in the Tehran Times quoted Ahmad Qavidal, the head of Iran's Hemophiliac Association, as saying that the International Federation of Hemophiliacs advised in 1994 that Iran needed an improved system for testing contaminated blood. The tainted blood has resulted in at least 187 HIV infections in Iran, said Qavidal, who added that he is also demanding compensation from the French company.
