Falling immunization coverage and malnutrition have given Malawi one of the highest infant mortality rates in Africa. Infant mortality rates are 133 per 1,000 live births, and the under-five mortality rate is 234 of 1,000 live births. In addition, many children are orphaned by AIDS. According to Malawi's health ministry, there are about 88,000 orphans in the country, many of whom had parents who died from AIDS; however, projected estimates place the number of AIDS orphans in the year 2000 at about 330,000.
