New statistics from British
Columbia's Center for Disease Control show that new HIV
infections from heterosexual contact accounted for 21.5
percent of new infections in 1998, compared to 7.9 percent in
1993. Last year, 89 heterosexuals tested positive for HIV in
British Columbia, up from 35 people five years ago. Throughout
Canada, heterosexuals accounted for 16 percent of all new HIV
infections, up from 6.2 percent before 1994.
