With 11 million cases of sexually transmitted infection treated each year in South Africa, health officials are aggressively emphasizing the need for better education and medical treatment. Dr. Priscilla Reddy, director of health promotion research for South Africa's Medical Research Council, noted that little attention has been paid to the role of education in managing sexually transmitted diseases in South Africa. "With the explosive HIV epidemic in the country, we just cannot afford to carry on treating 11 million cases of sexually transmitted diseases without introducing health education measures." The council is emphasizing programs that promote behavior change and encourage use of condoms and other forms of prevention, among other things.
