HIV Screening Saving Lives

August 2, 1999
CBC News Online (08/01/99)

In Alberta, Canada, a voluntary HIV screening program for pregnant women is saving lives and millions of dollars in healthcare costs. Launched last September, the screening program attempts to detect HIV before a mother can pass it on to her fetus. The program allows doctors to begin drug treatment in HIV-infected pregnant women earlier, reducing the risk of perinatal HIV transmission. Officials in Alberta, the only province in Canada that utilizes such a program, say that most women have agreed to participate. Of the more than 40,400 women screened, 12 have tested positive for HIV.
