Rocky Mountain News (Denver) (09.10.07) - Monday, September

The 20th annual AIDS Walk Colorado was held Sunday in Cheesman Park. Organizers expected the event to attract 7,000-8,002 people and raise $600,000. The walk's attendance peaked in 1998, when 12,000 participants raised $1.4 million. Deidre Maloney, executive director of the Colorado AIDS Project, blamed the lower numbers on the misperception that AIDS has been cured. "As awareness has gone down, walks around the country are seeing a leveling off. It's a perfect storm. We see new need every year, but decreased awareness," she said.
