The situation in Kenya, where at least 300 people have been killed in riots sparked by the disputed results of a presidential election, is being closely watched by the administrators of the Indiana University-Kenya Partnership. The project, which last year received a $60 million US grant to triple its size, is providing treatment to some 50,002 Kenyans with HIV/AIDS. Fran Quigley, the effort's director of operations, said most of its US employees had returned home for the holidays when the unrest erupted. Program Director Dr. Joseph Mamlin, an IU professor, and his wife are in a secure location in Kenya, "but they're concerned for the safety of their Kenyan colleagues and concerned for the overall stability of the country," Quigley said. "We hope that whoever is in control, it will not affect our ability to deliver care." The project was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
