December 9, 2008
Agence France Presse (12.01.08) - Tuesday, December 09, 2008
Singapore has toughened health laws in a bid to stop the
spread of HIV, but its government warned on World AIDS Day
that cases of the virus will likely hit record levels this
year as more people undergo testing. The Ministry of Health
reported that 382 new cases were detected in the first 10
months of the year, compared with 423 cases for all of 2007.
The 2007 figure represented the largest number of new cases
since 1985, when record-keeping began. Through October,
Singapore had logged 3,865 HIV cases, of which at least 1,144
had died.
