Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Riverside Counties said recently it will use an anonymous gift of almost $300,000 to provide the human papillomavirus vaccine Gardasil at its family planning centers. Specifically, the outreach will target women ages 19 to 26. "The Vaccines for Children Program offers the HPV vaccine to females 18 years old and younger, so we felt it was important to reach a population that is no longer eligible for that immunization program," said a statement from Katharine Sheehan, MD, the group's local medical director. "Gardasil significantly reduces a woman's risk of cervical cancer because it is 100 percent effective against 70 percent of the strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer," Sheehan said.
