Philadelphia Inquirer (02.14.2011) - Tuesday, February 15,
Online voting for the five finalists for the wrapper design of
a new Philadelphia-branded condom ends Sunday at 11:59 p.m.
EST. The art contest drew 124 entries, which were pared down
to five by a panel of artists and activists. The first run of
100,000 is scheduled for April and will include a Philadelphia
sticker on Trustex lubricated condoms. Condoms with the art on
the foil wrapping may arrive in the fall. The city health
department, which already distributes 1.5 million free condoms
annually, will stock the new brand at more than 100 locations
around Philadelphia, including college health centers, beauty
salons, and churches. The aim is "to renew interest in
condoms," said Caroline Johnson, disease-control director at
the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. "And to make
people sit up and take notice and say, 'Hey, look at this!'"
The idea for the contest was based on a New York City
campaign. To vote, visit www.condoms.stdphilly.org.
