Archbishop Desmond Tutu spoke at the United Nations about AIDS in the
world community, and the enormity of the statistics, especially the
number of cases in Africa. He put a voice and a face on the suffering of
people so they are recognized as human beings, and not as statistics.
Recognizing that the price of treatment is too high for developing
nations, Tutu urged other nations to direct some of their defense funds
toward saving lives. He advocated for safer sex and the need to control
the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. His underlying message was
to understand the impact that individuals can make to help each other.
