Numerous viruses are known to cause chronic infections in humans. Such infections are clinically important because of their association with a variety of disorders. The article reviews the mechanisms and clinical importance of such viruses, using Herpes simplex virus, Epstein-Barr virus and human immunodeficiency virus as examples.
