Verbal interaction between the nursing team and the AIDS patient.

OBJECTIVE: To determine with priority the pattern and areas of verbal behavior that occur between AIDS patients and nursing team according to the SAVI. To determine variability in verbal interaction. METHODS: The sample consisted of 90 hours of observations involving 3 nurses, 10 nursing auxiliaries, 4 nursing attendants and 3 patients admitted to a 600-bed Brazilian general hospital. Four trained and calibrated observers took turns so that one of them was always present on the ward. The observation techniques used were cursive report and recording with paper and pencil. Three referees judged the verbal units on the basis of the theoretical assumptions of the System of Analysis of Verbal Interaction of Simon and Agazarian (1967) and elaborated 53 matrices. The data were analyzed in terms of simple and percent frequency and also submitted to an electronic processing program for the calculation of the amount of information transmitted. RESULTS: From the 3336 verbal behaviors occurred, 1688 (50.60%) were in area E (Potential approach and/ or avoidance of topic); 686 (20,56%) in F (Potential approach and/or avoidance of topic and/or avoidance of topic and/or personal maintenance, 684 (20,50%) in H(approach to interpersonal topic); 258(3,73%) in J (approach to interpersonal maintenance and topic). The remaining ones distributed among all other areas. The interactive pattern was E-F-H-J areas. The matrix that most retained behavior was Team-Team (receptor), followed by Patient (utterer) - Team (receptor); Team (utterer) - Patient (receptor), and finally Patient (utterer) - Patient (receptor). The maximum amount of information transmitted was 0.3065 and the minimum 0.0405. CONCLUSION: Verbal behaviors ranged from relative ambiguity in terms of message clarity to clean and noncontradictory messages. There were no withdrawal messages (obscure messages). The interactions tended to move away from stereotype. These positive results may be attributed mostly to the inservice training received by the team, but there is room for further improvement.
