OBJECTIVE: This presentation will describe the history, purpose, and activities of the National AIDS Hotline (NAH), the world's largest health related hotline. METHODS: In 1983, the Federal Government established a toll free, 24 hour per day, telephone information service. The NAH answers questions regarding facts and concerns about HIV/AIDS. Services are provided to the general population of the U.S., its territories, and Puerto Rico. Information is provided in English, Spanish, as well as in TTY for the Deaf/Hearing Impaired community. In addition, the NAH provides free referral information via computerized data bases and also orders free HIV/AIDS publications for callers. Health professionals and the general public hear about the NAH through publications; exhibits and presentations at conferences and workshops; the America Responds to AIDS public service announcements; and through a growing outreach program. RESULTS: The NAH answers 100,000 calls, places 95,000 publication orders, and makes 65,000 referrals per month. Referrals include State and local AIDS hotlines, counseling and testing sites, legal support services, and health services. The nature of the calls, the staffing and technological requirements of NAH, and quality control will be discussed. CONCLUSION: Call demand, publication orders, and the number of referrals suggest that the NAH is helping serve the public's need for factual information about HIV/AIDS, how the virus is spread; and preventive measures which can reduce individual risk.
