OBJECTIVE: How to facilitate the taking care of PWH near their home? The Northern France AIDS Reference Centre is trying to accept the challenge by creating a centre of formation and specialized and focused information, for all health and social workers in Northern France. METHODS: A documentation centre is usable twenty four hours a day by phone, by Minitel, by fax and mail. In the minitel, can be found a lot of general informations on AIDS, precautions to be taken, therapeutic trials, useful addresses. Some diagnostic and therapeutic help systems can be also found. Physicians can also access by Minitel to multicentric therapeutic trials. The inclusions and the follow up of the elected patients are controlled with the help ot the Minitel. The public concerned is large: 6,000 physicians, 1,100 dentists, 7,000 graduate nurses, 2,000 dispensing chemists, 1,600 kinesitherapists, 3,000 social workers, a total of more than 20,000 professionals, for 4 million inhabitants in Northern France. RESULTS: One month after opening, we were receiving more than ten requests a day. They were focused on some subjects as: dosages of medicines, usefulness of tests in precise conditions, management of a precise patient. On the other hand, we were asked about workers and their risks of contamination by HIV during their work, and what to do when it happens a contamining accident. CONCLUSION: By the mean of a better distribution and diffusion of the information and formation, especially with the telematic system, it has been possible in two months to avoid the movement of an impressive number of professionals and PWH in Northern France.
