Statement from Rebecca Haag, Executive Director, AIDS Action Committee: Proposed Legislation, Mandatory HIV Testing re: Sexual Assault

January 5, 2006
BOSTON, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- We at AIDS Action support survivors of sexual assault and would support legislation that offers actual and practical assistance for survivors, but from today's press conference at the State House, it is not apparent that the proposed bill would provide either. As of this writing, the proposed legislation has not been filed.

Unfortunately, survivors of sexual assault have only 72 hours to decide whether to take the drugs that can prevent HIV infection. It is rare that the legal system can respond that quickly.

AIDS Action and others have a tremendous amount of expertise that would inform these conversations. We invited the Administration to create a process which would bring all involved to the table and fully investigate these complex issues. We hope they accept our offer, and we look forward to reviewing and informing the full proposed legislation.
