Latinos and Latinas in the New York Correctional System are the demographic group at highest risk of HIV infection. They comprise 32 percent of the prison population, but account for 47 percent of prisoners with HIV. Most prevention education in the prison system is taught by HIV-positive prisoners, but not enough is taught in Spanish. Confidentiality, equal access to medical treatment, discharge planning, and educational materials are of limited availability. The Latino Commission on AIDS is working toward equalizing treatment for this group.
