DNA and RNA viruses are being developed as vectors for gene therapy. The
early application of vectors focused on recombinant retroviruses as
vectors primarily in ex vivo applications of gene therapy. Recombinant
adenoviruses have been explited for in vivo applications of gene therapy
with the initial application being lung-directed gene transfer for the
treatment of cystic fibrosis. Adenoassociated virus is the most recently
developed viral based system which has the potential of efficiently
integrating genes into nondividing cells. In this presentation, I will
sumnmarize the strengths and weaknesses of DNA viral bgased vectors for
applications of gene therapy.
