More people are receiving health care from managed care programs, and a number of States are shifting their Medicaid programs to managed care providers. People with HIV and AIDS have long complained that HMOs and PPOs limit their access to HIV- experienced doctors and restrict the availability of some drugs, largely due to costs. HIV advocacy groups need to continue working with managed care providers to insure that these providers stay aware of new medications and have these medications added to the approved drugs list, when appropriate. It is important that consumers living with HIV and life-threatening illnesses work closely with advocacy groups to insure that the care they are receiving is current and adequate.
