We have suspected that the function of an individual's CD4
cells may be related to how quickly that individual
progresses to AIDS. Now, a report out of Amsterdam and
published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases establishes a
correlation between functional markers of CD4 cells and
progression to AIDS. Thus, we need to look at not only the
number of CD4 cells, but also how well those cells are
functioning to understand the state of an individual's HIV
disease. Unfortunately, we do not have readily available
tests to measure the function of T-cells. Such tests would
also help us to understand the real impact of an antiviral.
Though CD4 count might not dramatically increase, CD4
function might be enhanced by a given antiviral.
