European Union nations report nearly 80,000 TB cases annually, and multidrug-resistant infections (MDR TB) remain a concern, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control's 2011 Annual Epidemiological Report. TB was one of many infectious diseases discussed in the ECDC review of 2009- 10 data.

TB reports in EU and European Economic Area member states declined about 4 percent annually since 2005, ECDC said. In countries with complete data, the proportion of MDR TB cases was down slightly from 2008, to 5.3 percent in 2009. Of MDR TB cases, 7 percent were extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR TB), a slight increase from 2008.

It is vital to get antibiotic resistance under control, ECDC warned. "In order to fight against infectious diseases, continuous investment in and improvement of surveillance systems ... is of utmost importance despite times of economic recession across Europe," said Marc Sprenger, ECDC's director.
