PENNSYLVANIA: University of Pittsburgh Medical Center on Probation After Hepatitis Kidney Donor

November 16, 2011
Associated Press (11.15.11) - Wednesday, November 16, 2011

UPMC's transplant program has been placed on probation for up to one year by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network and the United Network for Organ Sharing, an action taken in response to a case in which the kidney of a living female donor with hepatitis was transplanted into her male partner. The probation designation by UNOS means UPMC has agreed to take corrective steps. UPMC formerly had two layers of precaution to ensure that a recipient did not contract a disease from a donor; that now has been expanded to a seven- step process, said Dr. Abhi Humar, the medical center's transplant chief. During the period of probation, UNOS will monitor UPMC's adherence to the new procedures. The additional oversight will not delay patient access to transplants or other services, Humar said.
