AUSTRALIA: Condoms, STI Tests Offered at Car Festival

January 6, 2012
Australian Associated Press (01.04.12) - Friday, January 06,

Thousands of auto enthusiasts are expected at this weekend's Summernats 25 Car Festival in Canberra, and Australian Capital Territory health workers will be on hand to offer free condoms and STI testing and treatment. "Chlamydia is the most prevalent STI in Australia and currently affects 5 percent of sexually active young people in Canberra alone, and, if left untreated, can lead to infertility," said a statement from ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher. Among some 700 people tested for chlamydia during the past two Summernats events, 3 percent were found to be infected. The car show, which has sometimes been associated with rowdy behavior, was sold in 2009 to new owners who have tried to make it more family-friendly.
