Longmont Times-Call (01.26.12) - Friday, January 27, 2012

About 50 parents attended a community meeting Thursday night to hear an update on the TB investigation at Longmont High School, where one student has been diagnosed with an active case of the disease. In the first round of testing - involving 13 youths who attended at least two classes with the ailing student, as well as the student's teachers - "We did find more positive tests than we expected to see," said Dr. Randall Reves, medical director of the Denver Health Department's TB Control Program. Due to its resources and experience, DHD joined the investigation when the active case was announced, on Jan. 16. A second round of testing, beginning Friday, will screen 140 students who had even one class with the infected youth. "If we find a high rate in this [expanded] group, then we're going to expand this out to a higher number of students," Reves told the parents. No other active case has been found so far.
