The AIDS Healthcare Foundation's "Condom Nation" tour kicked off Monday in Venice Beach, where outreach workers passed out free condoms to raise awareness of HIV and safe sex. "Condoms are an essential part of preventing HIV and STDs," said a statement from AHF President Michael Weinstein. "Not only are they extremely effective at preventing transmission, they are cheaper and easier to use than many other prevention tools." The event was the first stop in a nationwide tour for AHF's red, white, and blue 18-wheeler, which is scheduled to visit 20 states to distribute condoms and offer free HIV testing. The truck is expected to arrive in Washington in July, in time for the 19th International AIDS Conference.

Ged Kenslea, an AHF spokesperson, said the truck is rolling out with 750,000 condoms and will be restocked along the way. The goal is to give out more than 1 million.

Kenslea added that the rig's route includes stops in Southern states where the incidence of HIV is growing. After Venice, the rig will visit Oakland, Calif.; then Albuquerque, N.M.; Dallas; Baton Rouge, La.; Atlanta; and Jacksonville, Fla.
