AUSTRALIA: Don't Give an STI as Valentine's Gift: Australian Medical Association

February 14, 2012
Australian Associated Press (02.14.12) - Tuesday, February

AMA-Queensland is using Valentine's Day to warn about the dangers of sexually transmitted infections. "Contracting life- threatening STIs such as HIV and hepatitis is still a real risk for anyone not using a condom," said Dr. Richard Kidd, the association's president. He noted that chlamydia rates are up by 31 percent since 2007, and reported cases of gonorrhea have more than doubled. Kidd urged couples to use the holiday as an opportunity to discuss sexual health. "Make an appointment with your [primary care physician] for a sexual health check-up, and in the meantime remember that condoms don't kill people; they save lives."
