MAINE: Unlicensed Tattoo Artists a Problem in Maine

February 23, 2012
Associated Press (02.08.12) - Thursday, February 23, 2012

The Maine Center for Disease Control said the number of complaints regarding unlicensed tattoo artists increased more than two-fold last year - from 13 in 2010 to 31. Many of the complaints involved at-home "tattoo parties" where unlicensed artists ink minors and avoid paying taxes. Agency spokesperson Lisa Roy warned the practice increases the risk of HIV, hepatitis, and skin infections. The penalty for performing tattoos without a license can include a fine of up to $500 and a six-month jail sentence.
