Among actions taken in the Senate's Republican-controlled Education and Health Committee on Thursday was sign-off on a measure to repeal the mandate that Virginia school girls receive the vaccine against human papillomavirus, an STD known to cause cervical cancer. The proposed bill would make vaccination an "opt-in" provision. The state mandate currently in force includes a clause that lets parents opt out of vaccinating their child for any reason.
