WASHINGTON, July 31, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- August 1 will mark an important milestone for women across the United States. From this point on, thanks to the new health care law, new health insurance plans must begin covering eight critical women's preventive services without charging any additional costs, like co-pays.
To bring attention to this significant women's health moment and highlight the full scope of no co-pay services, Raising Women's Voices for the Health Care We Need, the Ms. Foundation for Women and women's health advocates from across the nation joined together to conduct a digital campaign, "What's In It for Women?" The campaign highlighted a different health service every day of the week leading up to August 1(st) on Facebook, Twitter, and through blogs at the website: www.CountdowntoCoverage.org .
This new coverage will have a profound impact on the health, safety and economic security of women, and many were simply unaware of the new benefits, or when they would take effect. Over the last week, through a groundswell of public education by "What's In It for Women?" thousands of people shared Facebook infographics, tweeted women's health facts and linked to blogs that highlighted the impact of these new changes on the lives of everyday women.
"These are services that women need across the lifespan and that many women postpone or just don't get because of the high cost," explained Lois Uttley, co-founder of Raising Women's Voices. "Women of all ages and races stand to benefit tremendously from this provision of the health care law."
Newly-covered services will include contraception, breastfeeding counseling and supports (including rental of breast pumps), annual well-woman exams, and screening for gestational diabetes, domestic violence, HIV and sexual transmitted infections, including HPV.
"This is an historic advance for women and our families because eliminating expensive co-pays and deductibles will make it easier for us to get the services we need to stay healthy," said Cindy Pearson, another co-founder of Raising Women's Voices and Executive Director of the National Women's Health Network. "As existing insurance plans are renewed and new plans are introduced, more and more women will gain access to these health care benefits that enable women to live healthier lives. "
