Two regular patrons of the Aurora Public Library’s Main branch have been diagnosed with active TB, according to the Kane County Health Department. On Monday, KCHD personnel performed voluntary testing on many of the system’s 167 employees. The Main branch has 75 employees, but the test was offered to all library workers, said Amy Roth, library spokesperson. The new cases are linked to Kane County’s ongoing TB outbreak, said Christopher Hoff, KCHD’s assistant director. The Aurora area has seen 42 confirmed TB cases in the past three years, Hoff said, and most have ties to Hesed House, an overnight homeless shelter. “During our investigation of these two new cases, we learned both people had been frequent visitors to and spent a lot of time at the library, especially during the hottest days in July,” Hoff said. “Because it’s been so hot and people have spent so much time indoors, our recommendation was that all library staff be tested.” Hoff added, however, that the risk is minimal for staff and nearly nonexistent for patrons. Roth said health workers will be on hand at the library Wednesday to collect the results of the skin tests and to screen workers who were not able to come in Monday.
