US Sen. Jack Reed announced Thursday that Rhode Island will get almost $2.2 million from CDC to promote early cancer detection and treatment. The money will be used to support several initiatives of the state Department of Health, including programs that offer breast and cervical cancer screenings to uninsured women, as well as free colon cancer tests. The funds also will benefit the Rhode Island Cancer Registry, which tracks state figures on cancer incidence and mortality, according to a report in the Rhode Island Democrat.
