The President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) Bethel Amadi has called upon African governments to “develop self-reliance” and increase spending to combat HIV/AIDS as donor funding dwindles. Amadi made his appeal to journalists in Johannesburg, South Africa, on October 9 during the First Ordinary Session of the Third PAP Assembly. Amadi claimed that the parliament is set to “tackle critical issues” such as the prevalence of HIV and AIDS but that governments must increase their budgets to “fill the gap” left by lessening donor funding in Africa.
