CDC HIV/AIDS/Viral Hepatitis/STD/TB Prevention News UpdateTENNESSEE: Judge Orders Cocke County Tuberculosis Patient Under Quarantine
October 23, 2012
A judge has ordered a woman with TB to be quarantined in Cocke County, Tennessee. Area leaders felt the move was necessary due to the highly contagious nature of the disease. The patient is currently being treated at Newport Medical Center. Spokesperson for Newport Medical Center, Deanna Hill, explains that for the last four years, the center has seen one to four cases of TB per year in Cocke County. The Tennessee Department of Health released a statement stating there was no risk to the population at large of exposure to illness linked to the patient. Those who believe they’ve been exposed to the disease are advised to contact the local health department. There will be a follow-up hearing for this patient’s case in Cocke County’s court next week.
