ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A former caseworker convicted of embezzling money from a nonprofit group that helps HIV and AIDS patients has been sentenced to five years of probation.

Federal prosecutors say Evelyn Facio of Albuquerque was sentenced Monday. In addition to probation, she was ordered to pay nearly $28,000 in restitution to New Mexico AIDS Services.

Court documents say Facio worked as a caseworker for the nonprofit for nearly a year. She was authorized to apply for housing assistance for its clients.

Prosecutors accused Facio of embezzling more than $35,000 in federal and state funds by authorizing fraudulent housing assistance payments to people who were not entitled to the funds.

After authorizing the fraudulent payments, prosecutors say Facio would arrange with those receiving the money to return part of it to her.
