Cupcakes made to be anatomically correct and look as if they are infected with HIV, gonorrhea, genital warts, and other sexually transmitted diseases are a part of the second annual Eat Your Heart Out exhibition at St. Bart’s Pathology Museum in London this week. The STD cupcakes were designed by Jenni Powell of Two Little Cats Bakery, and were intended to help raise awareness about the risks of having sex without protection. The baker intentionally chose diseases that could have visible symptoms and would “really make a statement on a cupcake!” She also wanted to make the symptoms appear as realistic as possible and so referenced medical journals and the internet as she designed the cupcakes. Powell went on to say that many have emailed her that they did not realize what STDs looked like and that they subsequently were off to buy condoms. “Even if one person takes away the educational message, then we’ve done a good job!”
