The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department in Lexington, Ky., is asking individuals to wear teal on January 25 as a way to help raise cervical cancer awareness. The department is also working to educate the public about the value of vaccines that have been shown to protect women against most cervical cancers. According to the organization Cervical Cancer-free Kentucky, screenings are highly effective in reducing the number of cervical cancer deaths. Almost all women who die from cervical cancer either did not receive screenings or got them infrequently. Jessica Jackson, spokesperson for the health department, notes that the screenings, called Pap tests, are recommended for women between the ages of 21 and 65.
