On February 5, Grand Bahama US Embassy’s Acting Chief of Mission John Armstrong viewed the future home of a health education resource center. The Red Rose Ball Committee (RRBC) accompanied him as he toured the site. RRBC has been working with and raising funds for the Grand Bahama AIDS Awareness Committee for the past 12 years and is now focusing on a youth branch of the organization by launching a Teen Prevention Education Program (PEP). The Pelican Bay Hotel, Teen PEP’s official sponsor, hosted a reception for principals and government officials in 2011. The US Embassy provided a grant to RRBC to launch a Teen PEP for high schools and the College of the Bahamas in Freeport. The program focuses on HIV/AIDS prevention, sexually transmitted infections, and abstinence. Through a series of fact gathering surveys and workshops, the program will discourage premarital sex and teen pregnancy.
