New York State Commissioner of Health Dr. Nirav R. Shah is encouraging the state’s health care providers to be sure they are following proper infection control procedures while administering injections to patients. The New York One & Only campaign’s goal is to re-educate health care workers about safe injection practices and to encourage patients to ask questions. Shah noted some incidents of health care providers neglecting to follow CDC’s “2007 Standard Precautions,” which emphasized the necessity for diligence in preparing and administering injections. According to the Safe Injection Practices Coalition, a group of health care-related organizations that includes CDC, since 2001 more than 150,000 patients in the United States have been informed that they may have been exposed to hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or HIV due to unsafe injection procedures by health care providers. The slogan of the campaign, “One Needle, One Syringe, Only One Time,” encourages patients to ask questions of their health care providers, including what steps they are taking to ensure that they will receive a safe injection each time.
