On March 19, the Santa Barbara, Calif., Board of Supervisors commemorated World TB Day at a meeting with Supervisor Lavagnino and by participating in the second year of the two- year “Stop TB in My Lifetime” campaign. World TB Day, which is March 24, honors the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch heralded his discovery of the bacteria that causes the disease. TB statistics from 2012 include the following: Santa Barbara County had 24 cases of active TB, an increase of 14 percent (3 cases) compared to 2011; California reported 2,189 active TB cases, representing a case rate of 5.8, compared to Santa Barbara County’s case rate of 5.6; and the Public Health Department Disease Control staff detected 111 at-risk individuals with close contact to active TB cases in an effort to break the chain of TB transmission. The Santa Barbara County Disease Control continues to work collaboratively with community partners to identify and treat high-risk contacts and active TB cases.
