In response to community concerns about dirty needles being discarded on the streets and beaches of Santa Cruz, Calif., officials are modifying the city’s needle exchange program. Residents near the Santa Cruz Health Services building located on Emeline Avenue said that they have found needles often and worry that the extended days and hours that the exchange program offers exacerbates the problem. According to officials, exchanges will now take place on a one-for-one basis. Services will be available at the HAS Public Health HIV and Prevention Office, located at 1070 Emeline Avenue, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The time will be extended until 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays. A second location at HAS Watsonville Health Center, located at 9 Crestview Terrace, will offer services from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
