According to a recently released HIV/STD Surveillance Report for the state of North Carolina, Edgecombe County ranks first in the state in reported cases of HIV and chlamydia, second for reported cases of AIDS and gonorrhea, and 17th for syphilis. The county has experienced a steady increase in confirmed STD cases from 2007 to 2011. The report also demonstrated that seven of the top nine counties with AIDS diagnoses were located in the eastern section of the state—Jones, Edgecombe, Lenoir, Wilson, Martin, Pitt, and Nash counties.
