After reviewing 13 years of data, researchers led by Dr. Roger Baxter of the Vaccine Study Center at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, Calif. found no evidence of a link between being vaccinated for tetanus, hepatitis, pneumonia, or flu and developing Guillain-Barré syndrome, a disorder in which a person’s immune cells attack the protective coating on nerve fibers. The disease may lead to paralysis, which is usually temporary. The full report, “Lack of Association of Guillain-Barré Syndrome with Vaccinations,” was published online in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases (2013; doi: 10.1093/cid/cit222).
