San Francisco's successful prevention strategies that have helped decrease the spread of HIV/AIDS may be the reason that STD rates continue to rise. According to the Department of Public Health, San Francisco's chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis infection rates have been steadily rising since 2007. The health department explained that this might be attributed to an increase in “seroadaptive” HIV/AIDS prevention methods, meaning that people consider HIV infection status when choosing a sexual partner. These methods have helped slow the disease’s spread; however, not using a condom means the spread of other STDs. The biggest increase of new STDs is among men who have sex with men.
