Condoms go down well with beer

What goes down best with a cold beer? It seems South Africa's top brewer thinks it's condoms.

To date, South African Breweries (SAB) has delivered 10million state-issued condoms to shebeens around the country when its trucks make deliveries.

Yesterday, The Times tagged along on a delivery to Khayelitsha, Cape Town. SAB's Ottery depot, which supplies 170 taverns from Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain to the West Coast, has delivered 350000 condoms in 18 months.

And it seems patrons cannot get enough of the "sweets" - their codename for condoms.

Each watering hole is issued with two boxes, with 200 condoms in each, every month.

"I don't think two boxes are enough. They are delivered on Tuesdays and they are gone by Saturday," said Zuki Joba, owner of Zuki's Place.

SAB's Sanele Gaqab said the company aims to distribute 845million condoms to 16000 taverns across South Africa in a bid to avert 1.6million new HIV infections in the next five years.
