Greenwood County education officials and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) are facing lawsuits accusing them of causing a TB outbreak at the Ninety Six Primary School by needlessly exposing others to a person with active TB disease. On June 12, the school district stated that it would ensure the sanitation of the Ninety Six Primary School buildings, and that they would pay for all who wanted to be tested for TB. Since May, health officials have performed TB testing on more than 600 people associated with the school. Of those, 74 tested positive for TB exposure, and 12 people have developed TB. Two adults have contagious TB - one is confined at home, and the other to a medical lockdown unit until he/she is no longer contagious, per DHEC Director Catherine Templeton’s orders.
