Associated PressNY jury to decide fate of offender in HIV scare

MAYVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - A jury is expected to begin deliberating the fate of a New York drug dealer who was imprisoned in the 1990s amid accusations he infected 13 young women with HIV.
Nushawn Williams completed a 12-year prison sentence in April 2010. But the 36-year-old has remained in custody as the state seeks to have him committed indefinitely under a civil law that allows extended confinement for the most dangerous offenders.
A Chautauqua County jury has heard testimony at a closed-door trial for the past two weeks. On Friday, jurors are expected to begin deliberations.
Before the trial's start, Williams' lawyer claimed that a new test showed that Williams isn't HIV positive. The state disputed the findings.
