On August 2 the Central Tibetan Administration in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University inaugurated a hepatitis B pilot project within Tibetan settlements in Bylakuppe in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. Trinley Palmo, a health department official, explained that from July to October of this year, Johns Hopkins University will work along with nurses from Tso Jhe Khangsar Hospital to determine how hepatitis B is currently spreading within the Tibetan community inside these settlements. Hepatitis B has been found at high rates among Tibetans and it is hoped the study will provide important information on how individuals may benefit from hepatitis B vaccinations as well as how those infected with hepatitis B benefit from medical treatment and what current treatment regimens are.
