Richland County, S.C., authorities were searching for a patient who left a Columbia hospital after being told he tested positive for TB. Police said the man, whose name was not given, walked out of the hospital Tuesday night, shortly after learning his diagnosis. TB is a contagious bacterial lung disease that is transmitted from person to person through the air and could be fatal if not treated. Health officials try to isolate infected people to reduce the spread of the disease. The Department of Health and Environmental Control also can order a TB patient detained.
