In an effort to bring down high number of gonorrhea cases in two Maine counties, officials are targeting places frequented by young women, the largest group testing positive for the STD. Androscoggin and Cumberland counties accounted for approximately 70 percent of the more than 450 gonorrhea cases reported in Maine last year. Officials placed posters in hair salons, nightclubs, colleges, and other places. A local newspaper reported the number of cases reported in the first half of 2013 was fewer than half during the same time period in 2012, which indicated the campaign might be working. Dr. Stephen Sears, state epidemiologist for the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, believed the number of cases was still too high.
