Statistics released by Ireland's Public Health Agency (PHA) on August 22 demonstrate that there is an increase in reported cases of gonorrhea in Northern Ireland. The surveillance report shows that there were 451 cases in 2012 compared with 336 cases in 2011. PHA health protection consultant Dr. Neil Irvine said that between 2010 and 2012, cases have more than doubled, rising from 200 in 2010 to 451 in 2012. Irvine said that increases have been seen in both heterosexuals and men who have sex with men, and suggested that newer, more sensitive tests may be catching more diagnoses. However, since syphilis and HIV diagnoses have also increased, Irvine added that it’s likely that there is increased transmission due to unsafe sex as well.
